UPS, & ERA SIGN MOU FOR USE OF ELECTRICITY FOR COOKING.

The Uganda Prisons Service and the Electricity Regulatory Authority on Wednesday 23rd March 2022 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U) at the E.R.A head office which will see the service transition from using biomass to electricity while cooking.

The agreement is a Government initiative to increase electricity consumption and save the environment.

The Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons, Samuel Akena who represented the CGP noted that the Service uses 30 tonnes of firewood every year for cooking in the 254 prisons country wide holding 67,000 prisoners and spends over 1.6 billion shillings on firewood annually.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority Chief Executive Officer Eng. Ziria Waako outlined the project benefits like reduction in pollution associated with cooking using firewood and improved health by eliminating inhalation of smoke during the cooking process.

The Ceremony was witnessed by the Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons, Production and Engineering, David Nsalasatta, Under Secretary, accounting officer, Samuel Emiku, Commissioner of Prisons, Logistics, Hillary Bisanga, Commissioner of Prisons, Project Development, Jude Kaliisa, Assistant Commissioner Engineering, Henry Tiberondwa and Superintendent of Prisons, legal, Victoria Nahyema.
