CGP TOURS NORTH WESTERN REGION
The CGP on 29 September 2024 toured the North Western region on an inspection visit of Yumbe, Moyo and Adjumani Prisons. He was accompanied by Senior officers from Headquarters and the Regional Prisons Commander. The tour, which began with a visit to UG. Prison Yumbe, aimed to inspect prison facilities, address staff and inmates, and promote the Uganda Prisons Service's vision, mission and values.
At UG. Prison Yumbe, Dr. Byabashaija inspected the ongoing construction of a prison ward designed to ease congestion and facilitate rehabilitation activities.
He addressed inmates, emphasizing the UPS's efforts to improve their welfare and urging them to maintain good sanitation, hygiene, and discipline. The CGP also highlighted access to justice opportunities.
Dr. Byabashaija then met with staff, emphasizing discipline, professionalism, patriotism, and integrity. He encouraged them to pursue career growth and development through courses tailored for Non-Commissioned Officers. Stability, continuous salary enhancement initiatives, and a positive work attitude were also stressed.
The CGP, Dr. Byabashaija interacted with staff spouses, supported their economic empowerment programs and urging them to start income-generating activities to supplement household income.
At UG. Prison Moyo, the Commissioner General paid a courtesy visit, inspected the facility, and offered guidance and counseling to inmates. He emphasized access to justice and encouraged them to take advantage of rehabilitation opportunities.
The CGP commended staff for their commitment and smartness. He encouraged them to prioritize their health through regular medical check-ups and urged junior and senior officers to pursue career growth through new Uganda Prisons human resource development initiatives.
Dr. Byabashaija met with officers in charge of prisons in the North West Region, emphasizing the importance of ensuring staff and inmate well-being and security. Discussions focused on strategies to enhance UPS effectiveness, including adherence to administrative guidelines, human rights observation, productivity, rehabilitation and reintegration, infrastructural development, preventing prisoner escapes, and efficient staff and inmate management.
Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, Commissioner General of Prisons concluded his working tour of the North Western Region, culminating in a visit to UG. Prison Farm Adjumani.
The CGP visited both female and male inmate sections at UG. Prison Adjumani, commending them on their smartness, hygiene and sanitation. He offered words of motivation and encouragement, emphasizing discipline, hardwork and the UPS' vision of providing human rights-based correctional services. He urged them to utilise Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) programs to facilitate rehabilitation.
Dr. Byabashaija inspected the livestock management and production project at Adjumani, which includes cross-breeding, animal fattening, and milk/beef production. The prison boasts 201 cattle, including Boran, Siwal, Brahman, and cross-bred Ankole and Zebu breeds. He also inspected the cotton production project, learning about agronomic processes and post-harvest handling initiatives. As a model prison, Adjumani engages in commercial maize production, agricultural mechanization, and agroforestry.
