UPS JOINS GLOBAL CORRECTIONS COMMUNITY AT ICPA 2024 CONFERENCE IN SINGAPORE

 

The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) is participating in the 26th International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) annual conference, held in Singapore from September 1-6, 2024. The conference, under the "Enabling Desistance: Beyond Recidivism," brings together over 800 experts from 70 jurisdictions to share best practices and advancements in corrections standards.

 

The conference features keynote addresses, plenary sessions, workshops, and visits to Singapore's best correctional facilities.

 

While opening the conference officially, ICPA President, Peter Severin, emphasized the importance of collaboration among corrections agencies. "ICPA is excited to hold the 2024 conference in Singapore, exploring initiatives that make a difference in people's lives and contribute to safer communities."

 

Commissioner of Prisons, Shie Yong Lee, highlighted Singapore Prison Service's commitment to hosting the conference. "SPS is honored to host the ICPA Annual Conference, sharing best practices and learning from experts to ensure safer prisons, safer communities, and a safer society."

 

The UPS contingent is led by Dr. George Muge, Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons (Director of Corporation and Corporate Affairs), representing Uganda at the conference. UPS' participation highlights its commitment to global corrections standards and its desire to learn from international experts, promoting safer communities, and upholding human rights.

 

The Uganda Prisons Service has been a member of ICPA for two-decades and has demonstrated its dedication to enhancing rehabilitation programs, promoting human rights and dignity for inmates, and strengthening community partnerships. "We are honored to be part of this global community, sharing experiences and learning from others to improve our corrections system," said Dr. Muge.

 

 

Mr. Frank Mayanja Baine, Senior Commissioner of Prisons (Deputy Director Corporation and Corporate Affairs) added that UPS participation in ICPA 2024 will enable them to adopt best practices and innovative strategies to reduce recidivism and promote desistance."

 

The UPS top leaders will engage with global experts on topics such as rehabilitation programs, community reintegration, and prison management.
