MUBS DONATES COMPUTERS TO INMATES UNIVERSITY STUDY CENTRE.

The Makerere University Business School, MUBS donated computers and a projector to the Inmates University Study centre at Upper Prison Luzira.

The donations were delivered by the MUBS Principal, Professor Waswa Balunywa yesterday the 4th May, 2017. The MUBS programs/ courses with the Prisons Service have been running since 2009, with unrelenting support and continued partnerships in the holistic rehabilitation of offenders.

UGANDA PRISONS SACCO 10th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, 2017

The Prisons SACCO held its annual general meeting on Friday 28th April, 2017 at the Prisons Academy and Training School Luzira.

This year’s SACCO general meeting involved elections of new chairperson and board members for a two year term of office. The SACCO under the stewardship of Commissioner of Prisons Kisitu Andrew saw a tremendous increase in value at 4.4.billion Uganda shillings with 8759 membership capacity compared to 3.2 billion shillings with membership of 7,140 in 2015 and 3.1 billion shillings with membership of 5875 in 2013.

PRISONS NETBALL TEAM RETAINS THE EAST & CENTRAL AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Uganda Prisons NETBALL team beat rivals National Insurance Cooperation (NIC) 46 - 45 at the East and Central African Championship in a closely contested final in Nyayo National Stadium Nairobi, Kenya. Prisons, the defending champions made sure to stamp Uganda’s dominance in this tournament by retaining the title in a tight contest. NIC have have been beaten finalists in the last two editions of the championships.

I. APPOINTMENTS, TRANSFERS AND LEAVE OF OFFICERS

1. Mr. Ericson Notti Nabimanya, SSP, Prisons Industries, on leave, has retired from Service at own request with immediate effect.

2. Mr. Joseph Semate Karubanga, SSP, Deputy Officer in Charge, U.G Prison Upper, is transferred to Kampala Extra Region as Staff Officer.

KIPROTICH FINISHES SECOND AT HAMBURG MARATHON.

Stephen Kiprotich finished in second position at the just concluded German Hamburg Marathon that took place yesterday Sunday 23rd April 2017.

Kiprotich was in the leading group for the first 15kms and then resurfaced to emerge 2nd after the 32nd KM. He exchanged lead with Kenya’s Tesgaye after the 35km mark but got tired and fell off and was left to fight for position 2 after the 41st kilometer mark.

This is his best time ever recorded in his race carrier as he looks to improve in next World Championships in August.

PRESIDENT COMMISSIONS CADET OFFICERS

H.E President Yoweri Museveni on 7th April, 2017 commissioned 73 Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Prisons, 128 Cadet Principal Officers and 122 officers on staff and command course at the Prisons Academy and Training School in Luzira.

President called upon the judiciary to expedite trials and sentencing of prisoners so as to reduce on costs on transportation of inmates to and from courts of law.

Following the advertisement that ran in the media in January 2017 and interviews which were conducted at the Prisons Regional Headquarters on 22nd March to 24th March 2017, the following candidates have been selected to join the Uganda Prisons Service as recruit Warders/ Wardresses.

OPM SUPPORT FEEDING IN KARAMOJA

The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni on 1 Mrach 2017 marked the African Day of School Feeding at Namalu Prisons Farm under the "Karamoja feeds Karamoja" initative by the Office of the Prime Minister in partnership with the World Fodd Programme and the Uganda Prisons Service.

The Deputy Country Director at the World Food Programme, Cheryl Harrison noted the the WFP was delighted with the joint partnership between WFP, OPM and UPS in the major steps taken towards home grown school feeding.

PRINCIPAL JUDGE TOURS LUZIRA PRISONS COMPLEX

The Principal Judge of the Republic of Uganda, His Lordship Yorokamu Bamwine early this week on 27-28 March, 2017 toured the Luzira Prisons Complex on a two day sensitization tour and launch of the Plea Bargaining Programme in the prisons.

He visited and interacted with inmates at Upper Maximum, Luzira Women, Kampala Remand and Murchison Bay Prisons. The inmates through their representatives requested fairness during the Plea bargains and should be based on first come first serve basis but not who is rich who is poor to show fairness.
